LABOUR BEATEN INTO FOURTH PLACE IN CHRISTCHURCH BY-ELECTION

Evennett meets
successful EU
referendum campaigner

David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, is pictured with Mark Francois MP, Shadow Minister for Europe, and Declan Ganley, Chairman of the Libertas campaign movement, on the Terrace of the House of Commons on Tuesday 1 July.
Mr Ganley led Libertas' successful campaign against the ratification of the EU Treaty in Ireland last month. 53.4% of Irish voters rejected the Treaty, with only 46.6% in favour.
Mr Evennett said "It was a pleasure to meet Mr Ganley, who led an excellent campaign against this European Constitution by another name. Ireland was lucky to get a referendum, however, Labour and the Liberal Democrats continue to deny the British people their say. Only the Conservatives voted in favour of a referendum in Parliament".

TORIES CELEBRATE POLL VICTORY

Local Conservatives celebrated last night their overwhelming victory in the Christchurch by-election when their candidate James Spencer romped home to victory and Labour was pushed into fourth place.
Bexleyheath & Crayford Conservative Association Chairman Joe Pollard commented "this is a great victory with Christchurch ward electing local resident James to serve and represent them and to help continue the good work being carried out by the Conservative Council in Bexley. Labour's negative tactics and spin-based campaign resulted in them being relegated to last place in this election. This is proof that no one locally wants a return to Labour. Now we Conservatives will continue our fight to get rid of this incompetent, out of touch and failing Labour government."
In his acceptance speech Cllr. James Spencer thanked his campaign team and pledged to work hard for the ward and all its residents. Then the new Councillor joined a victory party thrown by Bexley Council Leader Cllr. Teresa O'Neill and attended by David Evennett MP, Conservative Councillors and party activists.

Tracey welcomes Boris's decision to consult on western extension

Richard Tracey AM, London Assembly Conservative Group Transport spokesman, has welcomed Boris Johnson's announcement that he is to hold a consultation on the future of the Western Extension to the Congestion Charge Zone.
Commenting after the Mayor's announcement this morning, Richard Tracey said:
"I warmly welcome Boris's launching of a consultation on the western extension of the congestion zone.
"Ken Livingstone forced through the Western Extension despite the fact that Transport for London's consultation showed that 62% of residents were opposed to it. In addition 72% of businesses were opposed, so I am glad that they are to be consulted too. It was typical of the previous mayor that he ignored public opinion.
"There are strong economic and environmental arguments against the Western Extension and I would expect to find that a majority of the public is in favour of its removal, and it is quite right that the ultimate choice is made by those most affected by it."
Contracts negotiated by the former mayor, Mr Livingstone, for the western extension will not allow any changes to be made until November 2009.
