Brown has created an
unfair Britain

David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, has criticised the Government after a report showed that the number of people in deep poverty has increased since 1997 (19 August). In a statement to local Conservatives, Mr Evennett said that the Government has created an unfair society in which lower income families now pay more tax as a proportion of income than the richest.

The report listed a number of areas in which the Government had failed, including:
- More people are being left behind. The number of people in deep poverty has risen by 900,000 since 1997 and the gap in life expectancy is now the highest since the Victorian age
- Over two million of the poorest pensioners will lose nearly £100 this year as the rise in Pension Credit is wiped out by inflation.
- A decade of stealth taxes means that the poorest now pay more of their income in tax than the richest. For someone earning £100 a week, for every extra pound they earn they take home just 6p
- A failure to reform schools means that the unfair education gap between poorer and better off students is getting worse
- Rising public borrowing and economic incompetence is putting unfair burdens on future generations
Mr Evennett said "Constituents are frequently contacting my office to complaint about the unfairness of this Government. They particularly feel let down on tax, pensions, health services, and crime, where the Government has disregarded their views".
He added "Gordon Brown's autocratic style of Government has created an unfair Britain. Labour has let down people in Bexleyheath and Crayford. This country needs a Conservative Government that will provide an emphasis on opportunity and responsibility".

Candlelit Vigil for QMH

Bexley Conservatives announce details of next stage of hospital campaign

Campaigners fighting to save services at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup will hold a candlelit vigil on the Green next to the Hospital on the evening of Friday 19th September. Details of the date for the community campaign event were announced by Bexleyheath & Crayford MP David Evennett and Old Bexley & Sidcup Conservative Parliamentary candidate James
Brokenshire.

Further detailed information will be released early next month, but the event is intended to have a family focus and organisers are particularly looking for adults and children born at Queen Mary's Hospital to take part. The news comes in the wake of the decision by Bexley Council to refer plans to close QMH's A&E and maternity services to the Secretary of State.
Commenting David Evennett MP said:
"It is vital that we maintain the pressure in the fight to stop these cuts. Health service bosses and the Government need to get a clear message that Bexley residents want to see health facilities maintained at Queen Mary's."
James Brokenshire added:
"Now that these plans are being referred to the Secretary of State the next phase is to take the campaign into the community. We believe that the candlelit vigil will be a really positive way of showing both support for the hospital and the strength of local feeling."

Residents discuss Tesco objections

David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, is pictured with Cllr Simon Windle, Barnehurst ward councillor, and local residents at a packed public meeting held at the Scout Hut in Mayplace Road West, Bexleyheath on Saturday morning (19 July).
The meeting was organised by the Bexleyheath Community Involvement Association to discuss the two planning applications submitted by Tesco to redevelop the former Woolwich Headquarters in Watling Street, Bexleyheath, and how residents can object.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr Evennett said he had objected to both planning applications on the grounds of location, traffic, parking and the environment, and advised that residents should do the same.
