Evennett backs Proud of Pubs week
David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, is pictured behind the bar with landlady Sylvia Pearce at the Volunteer Public House, Church Road, Bexleyheath, on Friday afternoon celebrating the second Proud of Pubs week (18 July). Mr Evennett met with Mrs Pearce, staff and customers to discuss a variety of issues, including alcohol duty, licensing, live entertainment and competition. Mr Evennett said "Local pubs are an important part of the local community, and I was pleased to meet with staff and customers in The Volunteer to listen to their views. The pub industry faces considerable challenges in the current economic climate, especially with Gordon Brown's rises in alcohol duty targeted at all responsible consumers. "The Government must do more to back traditional pubs, or we risk losing them. Excellent pubs like The Volunteer are an asset to the community".

Students sample Westminster work
Local student Rebecca Fairbank and undergraduate student Aneeka Patel have been experiencing life at the House of Commons whilst working in the Westminster Office of David Evennett MP (7 July). They have been assisting in the office by filing, responding to Constituents, completing research tasks and participating in office briefings. Rebecca, a student at Townley Grammar School, has just completed a week long work experience placement, and is now going back to school to continue with preparations for her GCSEs. Aneeka, who is an undergraduate student at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, is in the middle of a three month internship, and will be returning to university in September to complete the final year of her degree. Rebecca said: "This has been an interesting and enjoyable experience from which I have gained new skills and knowledge which I am sure will aid me in the future". Aneeka said: "I am thoroughly enjoying the work and experience of life in a politician's office and I am also gaining a valuable insight into the inner workings of Parliament".
