Evennett backs Proud of Pubs week

David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, is pictured behind the bar with landlady Sylvia Pearce at the Volunteer Public House, Church Road, Bexleyheath, on Friday afternoon celebrating the second Proud of Pubs week (18 July).
Mr Evennett met with Mrs Pearce, staff and customers to discuss a variety of issues, including alcohol duty, licensing, live entertainment and competition.
Mr Evennett said "Local pubs are an important part of the local community, and I was pleased to meet with staff and customers in The Volunteer to listen to their views. The pub industry faces considerable challenges in the current economic climate, especially with Gordon Brown's rises in alcohol duty targeted at all responsible consumers.
"The Government must do more to back
traditional pubs, or we risk losing them.
Excellent pubs like
The Volunteer are an asset to the community".
